Lee’s Ferry, Arizona-6 trips for 2010

Filed under: Guided Trips, Shop Trips — Kevin Krai @ 4:10 pm

leesferrycanyonwallstgunn.jpg

Where- Lees Ferry is 15 miles downstream from Glen Canyon Dam. The dam holds back the Colorado River to form Lake Powell near Page, Arizona.

Historically, Lees Ferry served settlers as the only crossing of the Colorado for a couple hundred miles in the canyon country of American Southwest. Today, river rafters use the ferry as a their launch point just upstream from the entrance to the Grand Canyon.

While rafters float off downstream, we will head upstream by jet boat into the lower 15 miles of Glen Canyon. This is a spectacular stretch of canyon of winding sandstone cliff walls and clear waters which run below 50 degrees Fahrenheit year around.

When-We are running 6 trips to the Ferry in 2010, optimizing the best fishing of the year. Our trip schedule is as follows, always arriving on Friday afternoon and leaving on Sunday afternoon(you could add Sunday night for an additional charge); 02/20-02/21, 02/27-02/28, 04/24-04/25, 07/10-07/11, 07/17-07/18 and 10/23-10/24. The February trip finds fish in the shallows spawning and fish below those eating eggs. The April and October trips finds some of the best weather and consistent fishing of the year. The July trips are dedicated to fishing the Cicada hatch, big meaty dry flies with explosive takes.

The Fishing- Healthy and hard-fighting 14-19″ rainbow trout are the most common catch with some larger. Fishing with imitations of midges, scuds, and annelids is an effective year-round technique, but this time of year we hope to be able to fool them with drifted cicada patterns.

Accommodations- We will be staying at the Cliff Dwellers Lodge Friday and Saturday nights. Adjacent to the lodge is a well stocked fly shop and a choice restaurant. The lodge is minutes away from Lees Ferry and sits at the base of the spectacular Vermilion Cliffs.

Guides- Lees Ferry Anglers will be providing the guide services. This assures your captain is experienced and knowledgeable.

Cost-$550 per person. This includes 2 nights lodging and 2 days of guided fishing.

Panguitch Lake, Utah-April and July 2010

Filed under: Self Guided Trips, Shop Trips — Kevin Krai @ 2:51 pm

Join us for three days of unguided fly fishing on Panguitch and Piute Lakes in southern Utah June 16th-18th. Panguitch has rainbows that average 2 1/2 lbs with excellent possibilities of 5 lb fish. Bear Lake cutt’s that are of the same size and Tiger Trout that will eat these fish as a snack swim these waters. Leeches, Buggers and Baitfish will be the flies of choice on our April trip.  Damsels and callibaetis will be coming off by our July trip so dry fly fishing will be part of the mix. Scuds, leeches, midges and dragonflies are daily food for these fish so lots of different flies and techniques will be used.

Where:Panguitch Lake is located near the town Panguitch in Southern Utah. It is only a 7-8 hour drive from Phoenix which makes it as close as the San Juan.

When:We will be running 2 trips in 2010. The first trip is set to arrive on Wendsday, April 14th and returning on Sunday April 18th. The second trip will be arriving on Monday, July 12th and returning on Friday, July 16th. The April trip is planned for shortly after ice out and there will be big fish cruising in the shallows. By our July trip these fish have put on some weight and are keyed into the many hatches coming off that time of year.

Lodging and Meals:Included in the price of the trip is your lodging for 4 nights. We will be staying in Pangiutch, Utah. The rooms are nothing fancy, but are clean, comfortable and close to the places we will be fishing. The are several cafes and resturaunts in the area. Meals are not included in the price of this trip.

The Fish:Rainbows, Bear Lake Cutthroats and Tiger Trout are all present in Panguitch Lake. The rainbows and cutts average 2 1/2lbs and we have caught them up to 5 lbs. The Tiger trout can get even bigger than that. At Piute we are chasing smallmouth bass.

Cost:$250 per person. You also get access to our exclusive online forum dedicated to everything relating to your trip, from tips/tactics to meeting others who are going on your trip.

Piute Lake is an hour away with smallies that should be in the middle of thier spawn. We landed fish of 3 lbs last year. The tailwater below the dam is good for rainbows to 3-4 lbs, is very accessible and easily fished.

S. Fork Reservoir, NV-May 2010

Filed under: Self Guided Trips, Shop Trips — Kevin Krai @ 2:51 pm

Join us for a hosted self guided trip to S. Fork Reservoir in Nevada. S. Fork is located in the high desert near Elko, Nevada. It is managed as a recreational lake and keeps a minimum pool of 90% year round. It is home to the Eagle Lake strain of Rainbow Trout, Cutthroats, Cuttbows, Smallmouth Bass and Wipers. The diversity of fishing is as good as any lake we have found. We are fishing from pontoons and float tubes although in May there are outstanding sight fishing opportunities from shore.

Where:S. Fork Reservoir is located at the feet of the Ruby Mountains in NE Nevada, about 20 miles south of Elko. It is part of the S. Fork of the Humbolt River. It is a relatively new lake reaching it’s maximum pool in the 90s. It is a weedy lake with abundant hatches and forage food to keep the trout and bass fat.

When:We will be running 1 trip in 2010. We are set to arrive on Sunday, May 2nd and return on Thursday, May 6th.

Lodging and Meals:Included in the price of the trip is your lodging for 4 nights. We stay in Elko, Nevada. The rooms are suites with 2 queen sized beds, a couch, microwave, fridge and coffee maker. We are about 20 minutes from the lake. Elko has a ton of cafes, grocery stores and resturants. A continental breakfast each morning is also included in the price of the trip. All other meals are not included.

The Fish:Rainbows and Cuttbows will just be finishing up thier spawn in May. We can fish both the river coming into the lake(depending on runoff), the lake itself and the tailwater below the lake for trout. We have caught fish on dries, nymphs and leeches. The smallies should be in prespawn mode during our trip. This should put them in more shallow water and make sight fishing a good bet. The rainbows average 3-4lbs with fish over 6lbs caught on our trips in the past. The smallies average a couple of lbs and we have caught them up to 4 lbs. The wipers average 3-4lbs as well. The Cutthroat are in the 2-6lbs range. There are not many lakes we have found that offer the size and diversity of fish as S. Fork.

Cost:$275 per person. You also get access to our exclusive online forum dedicated to everything relating to your trip, from tips/tactics to meeting others who are going on your trip.

Antero Lake, CO-May, June and Sept 2010

Filed under: Self Guided Trips, Shop Trips — Kevin Krai @ 1:52 pm

Join us for a hosted self guided trip to Antero Lake, Colorado. Antero Lake has some of the biggest hardest fighting rainbows we have found anywhere. This weedy lake has abundant hatches and the fish get big and fat quickly. We have caught a good amount of fish in the 5-8lbs range and the average fish size is close to 4lbs. These fish are extremely acrobatic with big shoulders.

Where:Antero Lake is located about 90 miles West of Colorado Springs in the S. Fork area. We stay in the town of Fairplay which is 20 miles from the lake. Antero is at an elevation of around 8,000ft with several 14,000ft peaks in the backdrop. It is a high desert lake and the wind seems to be constant. Antero is part of the S. Platte drainage, so we are very close to the “Dream Stream” section of the S. Platte as well as Elevenmile and Spinney Reservoirs.

When:We will be running 3 trips in 2010. The first trip will arrive on Tuesday, May 11th and depart Saturday, May 15th. The second trip will arrive on Weds, June 16th and depart on Sunday, June 20th. The final trip will arrive on Sunday, August 29th and depart on Thursday, September 2nd. We fished the lake at these times last year with very good success.

Lodging and Meals:Included in the price of the trip is your lodging for4 nights. We stay in a hotel in Fairplay, Colorado. Nothing fancy, just a clean comfortable room to hang out in when we are not fishing. Rooms are set to sleep 2 unless other arrangements are made There are a few restaurants and cafes in Fairplay for breakfast/dinner and the rooms also have a fridge to keep lunch meat, etc cold. Meals are not included in the price of the trip.

The Fish:The main quarry in Antero is Rainbow Trout, there are also Cutthroats, Browns and Kokenee Salmon in the lake. The rainbows average 3-4lbs and we saw many fish in the 5-8lbs range. They are some of the hardest fighting fish we have found anywhere. The bigger fish really respond to leech pattern and the takes are explosive. There are some really big brown present as well. The Kokenee are a bit smaller in the 12-15″ range, but should continue to get bigger. The Cutthroat are generally a couple of pounds to 4 lbs.

Cost:$300 per person. You also get access to our exclusive online forum dedicated to everything relating to your trip, from tips/tactics to meeting others who are going on your trip.

Henry’s Lake, Idaho-October 2010

Filed under: Self Guided Trips, Shop Trips — WMF @ 4:44 pm

Join us for a hosted self guided trip to Henry’s Lake, Idaho. Henry’s is known as one of the best stillwater fisheries in the country. It has 10lbs fish that are caught just about every week of the season. We fish out of pontoons and over the past 7 years we have had good success with fish in the 5-13 lbs range. Average size of the fish is about 3lbs. We have also caught some large Brook Trout up to 4 1/2lbs. There is a multitude of other water in the area as well.

Where:Henry’s Lake is located outside of Island Park, Idaho and is only 20 miles from W. Yellowstone. Henry’s is a big lake and the one thing you can count on is wind. The Madison River, Henry’s Fork of the Snake and too many other stillwaters to mention are within 30 minutes of our cabin.

When:We will be running 2 trips in 2010. The first trip is set to arrive on Sunday October 10th and depart on Saturday October 16th. The second trip arrives on Saturday Oct 16th and departs on Saturday October 23rd. It can get extremely cold and snowy in October, so come prepared for weather. Often times the bad weather brings good fishing.

Lodging and Meals:Included in the price of the trip is your lodging for 7 nights. We stay in a cabin right on the north shore of the lake and can launch our boats from the property. For meals we typically cook in the cabin potluck style. There are some great local markets 10 minutes away that have some of the freshest and tastiest beef anywhere. There are also a variety of cafes close by. Meals are not included in the price of the trip.

The Fish:There are 3 species of fish in Henry’s Lake. Yellowstone Cutthroats that we have seen up to 8lbs, Brook Trout up to 5lbs and Cuttbow Hybrids which can get huge in excess of 15lbs+. We recommend a good 5 or 6 weight rod as well as different sinking lines to get your flies to the fish.

Cost:$350 per person. You also get access to our exclusive online forum dedicated to everything relating to your trip, from tips/tactics to meeting others who are going on your trip.

Lake Erie Steelhead-November 2010

Filed under: Self Guided Trips, Shop Trips — Kevin Krai @ 4:24 pm

Join us for a hosted self guided trip to Steelhead Alley in Ohio and Pennsylvania in November. There are over 10 streams ranging from small to medium sized in a 120 mile stretch along I-90. The number of steelhead in this system is really unbelievable. On good days, an angler can have a shot at catching 20 fish a day and see hundreds of fish. Even on slow days there tend be more shots at fish than a typical trip West Coast Steelhead fishing. We will fly into Cleveland or Pittsburgh depending on best airline rates.

Where:We could be fishing anywhere along the North Coast from Cleveland to Buffalo depending on the fish. About every 20 miles there is a Lake Erie tributary that supports some sort of run of steelhead. Most of these streams run relatively small and clear.

When:We will be running 2 trips in 2010. The first trip is set to arrive on Sunday 11/14 and depart on Thursday 11/18. The second trip is arriving on Thursday 11/18 and departs on 11/22. Transportation is not included in the price of the trip.

Lodging and Meals:Included in the price of the trip is your lodging for 4 nights. We have several places we have stayed in the past and once again it depends on the fish. All the places we stay have clean, warm and comfortable rooms. They are not 5 star however and we sleep 2 per room unless other arrangements are made. They are just a place for us to crash when we are not fishing. Meals are not included, but the close proximity of our lodging and the streams to resturants and cafes make it easy.

The Fish:Average size of the Steelhead in the system are between 5-8 lbs, with many fish over 10lbs being present. The return of a stocked Lake Erie Steelhead is 33% as opposed to the West Coast average of 1-2%. These fish are not up against the predation of the Pacific Ocean and also do not run much more than 10-20 miles upstream in most rivers vs. the thousands of miles Pacific Steelhead run. This means more fish.

Cost:$250 per person. You also get access to our exclusive online forum dedicated everything relating to our trips.
