Winter's Coming
Winter's Coming
The holidays will be here in no time and many of us hang up the fly rods until the spring arrives.....many, many months away. Wrong!. There's always some fish to catch around here all year long. This is close to the end for our high lakes and streams but the local bass lakes are always worth exploring and most of the time you will have them to yourself. My favorite time on Apache is the winter. Lee's Ferry, the Salt River, Oak Creek, Silver Creek, the urban ponds, lakes down around Tucson, Rocky Point....even the bass lakes in Mexico are all options to consider. Take advantage of the situation and do some exploring. I love this time of year because expectations are always low so if you get lucky and find that honey hole...it's golden. Try out some of your new weird flies and perfect them. Is the motion right? Would it ride better if it had dumbell eyes? Should I make it ride differently? How can I make it weedless and still have good hooking qualities? What if I put rubber legs or a Reaper tail on it? What kind of tail?
Experiment, have fun and go fish!

Fall Fishing
Fall Fishing

The weather is turning, the ferns are already starting to brown up and the bulls are bugling. This is the time to think of BIG fish in the White's. Crescent and Becker will be turning out good rainbows, the best we have seen in years. As the days get shorter and water temp's cool, this is the trigger for big fish to think FOOD. The colder it gets, the better your chances of landing one of the big boys. This year we have a legit chance at 5 lb rainbows, 3 lb brookies and of course always a 10 lb Brown.
Go fish!!!

Mountain Lakes

Monsoon's Here
The Monsoon rains are hitting the mountains pretty much daily now. This is a great time of the year to hit the high mountain lakes and streams. From what I hear the fire damage has had minimal impact on the lakes. Sunrise, Crescent and Big are all fishing well....with some big fish coming out. Some of the streams are unfishable now so get out of the summer heat and hit the stillwaters.
Hope to see you on the water

Play Time
New Dubbings
With the crazy winds we have been experiencing I have had more free time to play with new dubbings. I have been fooling around with a dubbing for over a year now that is similar to Ice Dub and have come up with two actually. One is a longer version,
AZ Mega Diamond Dub, that will be suitable for stillwater patterns and the other is shorter,
AZ
Diamond Dub, that will be suitable for smaller nymphs, leeches, emergers, etc. Both will have colors respective to their particular purpose. I plan to have at least 24 colors for each and available soon.
I also have had enough requests for ASD in longer lengths that I decided to go ahead and make
Mega AZ Synthetic Dub also. It is available
now with some exciting new color additions. Look for it in a Dubbinizer box soon.
Look for all these in Dubbinizer boxes eventually.
I guess down time is good sometimes....but I'd still rather be fishing.

Spring
Spring's Here
Most of the high mountain lakes are open and accessible. Looks like Carnero, Crescent and Sunrise made it through the winter all right. That's good news. If you can get up early this season, this is one of the best times of the year to catch big fish. AZG&F doesn't start stocking 'til sometime before Memorial day so any fish you get now will be a holdover of at least one season...bigger, smarter fish...the kind we like to catch. Most of the time you don't even need a kickboat. Just walk the banks and look for fish or blind cast.
The bass lakes will continue to produce big fish well into April as well so don't count them off your list either.
Looking forward to a great season.
Looks like I'm staying in the valley. Some things just weren't meant to be, I guess.
Hope to see you on the water

2010
Well, 2010 has come to a close. Seems like Y2K was yesterday. Lots of changes in the fly fishing industry....and more to come, I'm sure.
I want to thank all of you who have supported this site. It's just in its infancy and hopefully it will grow and become more useful and helpful. Check out the new Reapers, both rubber legged and plain. They're winners.
Look for changes down the road....always new tying products and new innovative fly patterrns to fool not just trout but all the other species we sometimes dismiss. I encourage you all to step out of the box a bit and pursue other species. It gets you out into different areas and helps you grow as a fly fisherman...something we all should strive to achieve.
I plan to move home base to the White Mountains in the spring of 2011. This will get me closer to my work. Look for up to date fishing reports that will change 2-4 times a week.
Here's some new bass/big trout streamers
Let's hope and pray 2011 is good to us all. We have plenty of water here in Arizona so enjoy it while we have it.
Hope to see you on the water.

FALL
Fall is upon us. With the wet summer the high country experienced be ready for the great late season fishing. In my opinion, throughout the years, this has proven to be the best fishing of the season.
In our high lakes big trout come in tighter to the shorelines, making for great sight fishing. The bass and stripers come up from the depths and chase shad balls making for some exciting top water fishing. Big browns become more active and more visible in our streams late season.
Be ready. Check out our tried and true patterns for Arizona's trout and bass.
Have a great Fall fishing season. I hope to see you on the water
